Support for Adults and Families

Is Outpatient Treatment the Right Next Step?

Harbor Wellness Center helps adults whose alcohol or drug use is affecting their health, relationships, work, family life, or emotional well-being. Outpatient care provides structured clinical support while allowing clients to continue living at home or in supportive housing.

  • Repeated attempts to stop using without lasting success
  • Increasing alcohol or drug use and strong cravings
  • Problems at work, school, home, or in relationships
  • Anxiety, depression, or trauma alongside substance use
  • A return to use after detox or residential treatment
  • A need for more support than weekly therapy provides
  • A desire for treatment while maintaining daily responsibilities
  • A family seeking professional guidance for a loved one

A Full Outpatient Continuum

Find the Appropriate Level of Care

No single level of treatment is right for everyone. Harbor’s admissions and clinical teams evaluate each person’s needs and recommend an appropriate starting point.

Most Structured

Partial Care Program

Partial Care Program in New Jersey provides comprehensive daytime treatment for adults who need significant clinical structure without living at a residential facility. Partial Care can include group therapy, individual counseling, recovery education, mental-health support, relapse prevention, and case management.

Structured and Flexible

Intensive Outpatient Program

Harbor’s Intensive Outpatient Program provides regular clinical support with flexible day and evening programming. IOP can be appropriate following detox, residential care, or Partial Care, or when weekly outpatient therapy does not provide enough structure.

Ongoing Support

Outpatient Program

The Outpatient Program provides flexible continuing care for adults who are ready for less structure while maintaining counseling, accountability, medication support when appropriate, and a plan for long-term recovery.

Program placement and duration are based on individual clinical needs. Medical detox or a higher level of care may be recommended before outpatient admission.

Whole-Person Treatment

What Treatment at Harbor Can Include

Each treatment plan is individualized. Services may be combined based on substance-use history, mental-health needs, recovery goals, family circumstances, and clinical recommendations.

1

Individual Therapy

One-on-one counseling provides space to address personal goals, triggers, trauma, relationships, and barriers to recovery.

2

Group Therapy

Clinician-led groups build connection, accountability, communication skills, and practical tools for everyday recovery.

3

Relapse Prevention

Clients identify warning signs, strengthen coping skills, and develop a realistic plan for managing cravings and high-risk situations.

4

Dual-Diagnosis Care

Dual diagnosis treatment can address anxiety, depression, trauma, and other co-occurring mental-health concerns alongside substance use.

5

Medication Support

When clinically appropriate, medication-assisted treatment may be combined with counseling and behavioral care.

6

Family Support

Family sessions and education can improve communication, establish healthier boundaries, and help loved ones understand recovery.

7

Case Management

Practical support can connect clients with medical, vocational, educational, housing, and community resources.

8

Peer and Alumni Support

Recovery-focused connection helps clients build community and continue receiving encouragement beyond formal treatment.

Evidence-Based and Individualized

Treatment That Addresses More Than Substance Use

Substance use can overlap with trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and other emotional challenges. Harbor works with each client to identify triggers, strengthen recovery skills, and address the conditions that can contribute to continued use.

Understand the Pattern

Treatment explores personal triggers, behaviors, experiences, and mental-health symptoms connected to alcohol or drug use.

Build Practical Skills

Clients practice emotional regulation, coping strategies, communication, mindfulness, life skills, and relapse-prevention tools.

Plan for Continued Recovery

The care team helps each client develop a realistic plan for ongoing support, accountability, community connection, and long-term wellness.

Depending on clinical needs, care may incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed treatment, and mindfulness-based practices.

Harbor provides Partial Care, Intensive Outpatient, and Outpatient treatment for adults. The appropriate starting level is based on clinical needs, recent substance use, mental-health symptoms, recovery environment, and prior treatment history.

How do I know whether Partial Care, IOP, or OP is appropriate?

An admissions and clinical assessment helps determine the amount of structure and support that may be appropriate. Partial Care generally provides the most intensive outpatient structure, IOP provides regular structured treatment with greater flexibility, and OP provides ongoing care at a lower frequency.

Can I continue working or caring for my family during treatment?

Many clients are able to maintain important responsibilities during outpatient care. Harbor offers day and evening programming, but the recommended schedule depends on the client’s clinical needs and selected level of care.

Coverage varies by insurance company, plan, medical necessity, and level of care. Harbor’s admissions team can review insurance information and explain available benefits and potential next steps.

How long does treatment last?

There is no single treatment length that is right for everyone. Duration depends on clinical progress, treatment goals, level-of-care recommendations, insurance authorization, and the ongoing needs identified by the care team.

Can family members participate?

Family involvement may include counseling, education, communication support, and guidance about healthy boundaries. Participation is determined individually and handled with appropriate client consent and confidentiality.

Some people can begin directly in an outpatient level of care, while others need medically supervised detoxification or residential treatment first. Admissions can help discuss the safest and most appropriate next step.

Planning can include stepping down to another outpatient level, individual providers, peer and alumni support, community recovery resources, and case-management assistance. Recommendations are based on each client’s continuing needs.

Harbor Wellness is a place of miracles.

Miracles happen there. Recovery is the redemption of a broken society and Harbor Wellness makes it possible. The curriculum Ashley Ryan put together is brilliant and accessible and life changing. Bryce is a role model, a scholar, and a gentleman. A place is only as good as its people, and the people here are all amazing. They teach you how to rebound better than coach Carter. They saved my life but also my quality of life. Now I have ambition, and the skills to achieve it thanks to this organization.

Thank you for helping my family.

When my brother first went to Harbor my family was praying that he would get the help he needed. What we got was so much more , he not only received help, he received healing. The inner work he was able to do there showed us how a recovery center with adequate resources can make a huge difference. We are thankful we were referred to this center , but I do think things would have been different if we found out about this place sooner! We appreciate the help of the staff and others who support those who need assistance. This was not the first recovery center my brother had been to but it was worth the wait for finding it because of how his life has changed.

This place really cares about everyone succeeding.

Good comradery but great people – definitely would recommend to anyone who may be struggling with substance abuse problems/addictions. At Harbor wellness there is a very Strong Network and very knowledgeable staff. Plus the counselors are really great at both making/individualizing treatment plans based around the clients. And this place really cares about everyone succeeding while they are here and even after here. I can’t even begin to tell you about all that it’s done for me.

Harbor Wellness is a great program with great employees.

Everyone there has been more than helpful and professional. I can honestly say I most likely wouldn’t be here today if not for this program. It has been essential to my recovery and I couldn’t be more grateful for everyone there. As an addict for over 20 years, I can honestly say this program works and I would definitely recommend it to anyone thats looking for help. They saved my life and they can save yours as well.
