What is National Recovery Month?

National Recovery Month occurs every September as declared by presidential proclamation. National Recovery Month aims to educate Americans on the merits of substance use disorder treatment for those suffering from alcoholism or addiction.

National Recovery Month also celebrates the progress of those in recovery from addiction or alcoholism much like how we celebrate the progress of those with other ailments such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease. This helps solidify that behavioral health services are essential to the overall health of the individual.

Every September, large numbers of prevention, treatment, and recovery organizations, and facilities throughout the country celebrate Recovery Month. They discuss strides made by those in recovery and highlight their success triumphs with their neighbors, friends, and colleagues. In doing this, they continue to increase awareness and create a greater understanding of mental and substance use disorders.
